Some thoughts on a fine Monday evening...

Hey Everybody!

Just wanted to let everyone know that RC4GA attended the 2011 Girls Rock Camp Alliance (that would be GRCA) conference and meeting this past weekend in Washington, DC. We picked up some super new ideas and you can look forward to meeting a LOT of new folks from other parts of the country this summer hopefully! There are more than a few people out there that are really excited about what we're trying to do in West Virginia.

Speaking of people being excited... guess what? The Mockingbird Foundation elected to award us a grant!!! We applied way back in November and just found out this afternoon! This is a foundation set up by the fans of Phish (the band) that specifically concentrates on funding of non-traditional, participatory music programs for underserved populations. Guess what? That's us. They only gave out 6 this year and generally fund less than 2% of applicants. How COOL is that? We're the first to receive one from the state of West Virginia!

Also, because I have received a barage of emails about participants and volunteer applications in the last few days (seriously guys, what is it about waiting for the last minute that really does get people going?), the deadline for applications has been extended until April 15th. So come on, get yours in already! Email rockcamp4girlsapp@gmail.com if you'd like one sent to you electronically!

And, last but NOT least... next weekend is a super fun FUNDRAISING weekend-arama for us! April 8th we are doing our usual monthly food fundraiser at the Rock Lake Community Life Center's Friday Night Shindig event, so come on out and make some awesome music, do some art, have some fun with bubbles, etc. And then the VERY NEXT DAY we are having our first benefit show of the year! The Unitarian Church in Charleston has allowed us use of their space for the evening, so come on over around 6 and listen to some fun musicians! Suggested donation is 7 dollars at the door.

Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia: A HUGE SUCCESS!

We would like to thank all of the volunteers and campers for making the first ever Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia a HUGE success. It was such a huge success in fact, that we made the front page of the Charleston Gazette! Way to go girls! (You can read the full story here: http://www.wvgazette.com/News/201006251065)

Here's what camper Trystan Lively said about her experience at camp:

Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia was a great experience. You get to pick an instrument to learn, form bands, and even write a whole song in only a week. Not only do you get to do all that, but you get to play your band's song that you helped write in front of your family and friends on stage at the end of the week! It is a really empowering experience, and while you’re having fun, you’re working on your self confidence. You might not notice how much self confidence you actually get from it, but by the end of the week you’re gonna be rockin’ out with your friends on stage. If that’s not self confidence then I don’t know what is! Now we don’t just sit around and play our instruments the whole time, we still have other things to do. Sometimes we go outside and do crazy fun things, and sometimes we have little workshops that we do. We also have a reflection everyday, and the rest of the time we just chill and maybe go practice our instrument a little, or even jam on another instrument.
Ok so if you have read this and it doesn’t sound awesome yet, then I think you should read it again because Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia is one of the most awesome things out there for girls who want to rock hard and jam out.

RC4GA: THE BENEFIT SHOW!

We couldn't be more excited and we hope you'll join us. All proceeds will go to operating costs for the camp, including transportation to and from the final performances, food for the campers, RC4GA t-shirts that they can take home with them, and recording costs.

Rock Camp 4 Girls at the Unitarian Church, Saturday May 1st

This Saturday, May 1st from 8am to 12pm, RC4GA will be at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation hosting a bake and coffee sale during their annual rummage sale. And if you haven't had a chance to request an application, we'll have plenty on site.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation is at 520 Kanawha Blvd, in Charleston. We hope to see you there!

Updates from Rock Camp 4 Girls!

Hey RC4GA Enthusiasts,

After long months plugging away at the planning of the first ever Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia summer camp, here are some updates:

- Applications will be released on April 19th!
- The age of the camp has been increased to age 10, meaning we will now only take girls ages 10 to 17. We apologize for the inconvenience. We had to make this decision due to a number of reasons, including not wanting to compete with other important, local summer programs like Energy Express.
- Fundraisers, fundraisers, fundraisers! We have many events scheduled in the next couple of months including a benefit show on May 15th at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Charleston. More details to come!

Volunteer Interest Calls

It's early March and Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia is upon us in less than four months. Very exciting! RC4GA is unique for many special reasons...but one of the biggest reasons of course, is that we're a free camp. And nothing is free these days! Because we're free though, it also means we rely heavily on volunteers.

If you're interested in volunteering in any way for RC4GA (whether it be as an instructor, parent volunteer, workshop presenter, guest band at a benefit, etc), you will need to call into one of our four mandatory
Volunteer Interest conference calls in the next three weeks. If you miss these calls, contact Janine Cunningham (304-855-5402, jcunningham@stepbystepwv.org) and set up an alternate time.

The Volunteer Interest Conference Calls will be held:

Monday, March 8th at 6:00pm
Thursday, March 11th at 12:00pm (Noon)
Tuesday, March 16th at 9:00am
Wednesday, March 24th at 4:00pm

RC4GA Steering Committee Now Forming

Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia has put together a steering committee of future camp participants. These ambitious young ladies are the official youth representatives of RC4GA. They will inform the staff of what issues they face as girls and young women in their community, why they want to attend RC4GA, and why they think it's important. They will also inform us as to what workshops they'd like to see and what we should include during the week so they get the most out of their camp experience. In addition, the steering committee will also help the RC4GA fundraise both for general expenses and for their own "special fund" which will give them an opportunity to raise money for their own special project of their choosing.

The steering committee meets twice a month for a half an hour. The next meeting will be held March 1st, at 4:00pm. There are still spaces open available! Email: rockcamp4girlsapp@gmail.com or call Janine Cunningham at (304) 855-5402.

The first ever Rock Camp 4 Girls Appalachia will be held June 21st through June 26th, 2010 at the Big Ugly Community Center in Harts, West Virginia.

Interested in being an instructor? Great! You just need to identify as a woman and be willing to volunteer your time. However lodging and food will be provided and your travel (within West Virginia) may be reimbursed. Contact jcunningham@stepbystepwv.org for more information!

Rock Camp for Girls Appalachia Now Forming!

Rock Camp for Girls Appalachia (RCGA) is an emerging music camp for girls and young women ages 8 to 18 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. Set to take place in early June of 2010, the RCGA will bring 20 girls together from the southern part of the state for an amazing week-long adventure at the Big Ugly Community Center in Harts (about 45 minutes away from Charleston). Participants will spend their days receiving instrument instruction, forming bands, and attending empowerment and DIY workshops. There will be public performances at the end of the week in both Big Ugly and Charleston. And best of all, it will be free of charge!

Why a girls only camp? Because girls and young women need a safe space to learn about themselves, their abilities, and their potential. They need a place where they can discover for themselves who they truly are, away from external powers like mass media and peer pressure...which focus on what girls should be and not what they could be. RCGA uses music as a medium to empower young women so that they can grow up to be self-confident women of the future. Oh yeah...and we always want to see more women rock!

Rock Camp for Girls will be held at the Big Ugly Community Center two months ahead of the annual two-week Appalachian Music Camp in August.
